HOWTO: Deploy VMware vRealize Automation 6.x IaaS Web Servers (Distributed Install)

Prerequisite Steps

  • Deploy and configure a supported Highly Available SSO Solution.
  • Deploy and configure a supported Highly Available vRA Appliance solution ( HOWTO ).
  • Create DNS A and PTR Records for:
    • vRealize Automation IaaS Web VIP
    • vRealize Automation Server 1 (assumed as part of AD join)
    • vRealize Automation Server 2 (assumed as part of AD join)
  • Create a Subject Alternative Name Certificate containing the following FQDNs:
    • vRealize Automation IaaS Web VIP
    • vRealize Automation IaaS Web Server 1
    • vRealize Automation IaaS Web Server 2
  • Deploy two Windows Server 2012 Virtual Machines ( PDF ).
  • Configure the VMware vRealize Automation IaaS Prerequisites ( HOWTO ).
  • Configure a Load Balanced VIP for the vRA IaaS Web Service ( PDF ).

Overview

  1. Disable vRealize Automation IaaS Web Health Monitors.
  2. Disable Secondary Server in the vRealize Automation IaaS Web Service VIP.
  3. Download the IaaS Installer from the vRealize Automation Virtual Appliance
  4. Install the Primary VMware vRealize Automation Web Server.
  5. Install the Secondary VMware vRealize Automation Web Server.
  6. Enable Secondary Server in the vRealize Automation IaaS Web Service VIP.
  7. Enable vRealize Automation IaaS Manager Health Monitors.

Step by Step Instructions

Download the IaaS Installer from the vRealize Automation Virtual Appliance

Install the Primary VMware vRealize Automation Web Server.

Log into the Primary vRealize Automation Web Server as the vRealize Automation Service Account.

Locate the IaaS Installer (setup_cx-vra-602.thecloudxpert.local@5480.exe) and right-click and select Run as Administrator.

If prompted by a User Account Control dialog, click Yes.

Click Next.

Check the I accept the terms in the license agreement checkbox and click Next.

Enter the root credentials (Username and Password) of the vRealize Automation Appliance (where you downloaded this IaaS installer from) and check the Accept Certificate checkbox.

Click Next.

Select Custom Install and then select IaaS Server option. If required/desired click Change to change the Root Install Location and click Next.

Check the Website and ModelManagerData checkboxes.

Note: If you didn’t know the ModelManagerData has to be installed on the Primary Web Server.

Select the Web IaaS certificate from the Available certificates dropdown and then click the Model Manager Data tab.

Enter the FQDN of the load balanced VIP for the vRA Virtual Appliances into the Server textbox, click Load, click Download and then check the Accept Certificate checkbox (assuming the correct certificate is loaded from the vRealize Automation Appliance).

Enter administrator@vsphere.local into the User Name textbox, enter (and Confirm) the Password for the account, then click Test.

Enter the FQDN of the IaaS Web Service VIP into the IaaS Server name text field is correct and click Test.

Click Next.

Check to ensure the prerequisites have all been completed and click Next.

Note: You will see that the Next button is still greyed out and a IIS Server warning exists regarding the installation of IIS. As i know i have completed this configuration, I can safely click Bypass before I can click Next.

Enter the Password for the vRealize Automation Service Account (this should be automatically populated as it should be the currently logged on user), enter and confirm a Passphrase for the encryption at rest for the IaaS Database, and then, under Microsoft SQL Server Database Installation Information, enter the name of the SQL Server (including instance name) into the Server textbox and the confirm the name of the Database.

Click Next.

Click Install.

Click Next.

Uncheck the Guide me through the initial system configuration checkbox and click Finish.

Install the Secondary VMware vRealize Automation Web Server

Note: it is a common practice to configure one of each role within a vRealize Automation solution to ensure. If that is what you are doing, then skip the next section for now and go and install the Primary vRealize Automation IaaS Manager Service and then come back to the Secondary vRealize Automation IaaS Web Server once you have installed the single components.

Log into the Primary vRealize Automation Web Server as the vRealize Automation Service Account.

Locate the IaaS Installer (setup_cx-vra-602.thecloudxpert.local@5480.exe) and right-click and select Run as Administrator.

Click Next.
